Everyone knows about &#8220;Free Weights,&#8221; which are our barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, body weight exercises (Pull Ups) and weighted exercises (Weighted Pull Ups).\u00a0 What is everything else called!?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_668\" style=\"width: 279px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gahealthguide.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/905.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-668\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-668\" alt=\"Lever (Selectorized) Leg Extension\" src=\"http:\/\/gahealthguide.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/905.jpg?w=269\" width=\"269\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lever (Selectorized) Leg Extension<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A &#8220;Lever&#8221; machine is one where the movement is restricted to a single movement of a lever;\u00a0 These are what most people refer to when they&#8217;re referring to &#8220;machines.&#8221;\u00a0 There are two types of lever operated machines&#8211;\u00a0 Selectorized lever machines, and plate loaded lever machines.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_669\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gahealthguide.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/plate_loaded_machine_high_row.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-669\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-669\" alt=\"Plate Loaded High Row\" src=\"http:\/\/gahealthguide.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/plate_loaded_machine_high_row.jpg?w=265\" width=\"265\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lever (Plate Loaded) High Row<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They differ in one giant way&#8211;\u00a0 How the weight is added and \/ or changed for the exercise.\u00a0 You <em>select<\/em> which weight you want to move on a &#8220;Selectorized&#8221; machine by placing a pin in the hole of your desired resistance on the weight stack.\u00a0 A plate loaded lever machine, like the name suggests, accepts traditional weight plates to change the resistance \/ weight moved during the exercise.\u00a0 Gyms typically opt for selectorized machines over plate loaded machines because they&#8217;re more convenient for gym users, regarded as &#8220;safer,&#8221; and typically take up less space.\u00a0 If a workout calls for &#8220;Plate Loaded Chest Press,&#8221; or &#8220;Selectorized Chest Press,&#8221; these are what they&#8217;re talking about.\u00a0 (Pro tip:\u00a0 If it only says &#8220;machine,&#8221; they mean the selectorized version 99% of the time.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_665\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gahealthguide.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/smith-machine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-665\" class=\"size-full wp-image-665\" alt=\"This is a Smith Machine.\" src=\"http:\/\/gahealthguide.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/smith-machine.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is a Smith Machine.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Smith Machine is a barbell with a hook &amp; latch safety system built in so that you don&#8217;t become pinned while performing &#8220;dangerous&#8221; exercises without a spotter.\u00a0 Smith Machine&#8217;s should typically be reserved for pushing yourself very hard on the bench press, but is widely used for any workout.\u00a0 (At my gym, everyone uses it for shrugs and upright rows for some inexplicable reason.)\u00a0 I&#8217;m not here to talk about how you should really stay away from the Smith unless you&#8217;re pushing yourself on the bench press (or variants), and how it makes every exercise insanely easier by taking most muscles out of the exercise&#8211;\u00a0 That&#8217;s the subject of another post.\u00a0 If a workout calls for &#8220;Smith Machine Squats,&#8221; they&#8217;re talking about this.\u00a0 (While some would argue that you could use the Smith to push yourself with Squats, many would disagree.\u00a0 Ask for a spot.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_666\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gahealthguide.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/angled-leg-press-601.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-666\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-666\" alt=\"&quot;Sled&quot; 45 Degree Leg Press\" src=\"http:\/\/gahealthguide.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/angled-leg-press-601.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-666\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Sled&#8221; 45 Degree Leg Press<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The sled is a plate loaded system where you load the weight plates onto a sled that moves along a track.\u00a0 Pretty straight forward&#8211;\u00a0 Typically reserved for leg press type exercises.\u00a0 If a workout calls for a &#8220;Sled Hack Squat,&#8221; they&#8217;re talking about something like this.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_667\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gahealthguide.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/cable-machine.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-667\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-667\" alt=\"A Cable Cross Station.\" src=\"http:\/\/gahealthguide.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/cable-machine.png?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-667\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Cable Cross Station.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is a cable cross station&#8211;\u00a0 There are many variations of cable sytems and cable machines, but they all share something in common&#8211;\u00a0 They used a &#8220;selectorized weight stack&#8221; attached to a cable and pulley system, and carabiner secured interchangeable handles.\u00a0 They offer a lot of versatility when it comes to exercises, angles, and range of motion; but be careful&#8211;\u00a0 Don&#8217;t opt for the multiple pulley systems when there&#8217;s a single pulley system available to use. Remember back to your middle school physics class&#8211;\u00a0 Each additional pulley adds mechanical advantage and makes the work easier.\u00a0 This is why I can Triceps Press the stack on a two pulley system, but am only pressing 100 lbs. on a single pulley system.\u00a0 (<em>Side note:<\/em>\u00a0 I know older cable systems were sometimes plate loaded, but I think the most recent evidence of one of those existing was from a picture of Arnold in the early 70s.\u00a0 For that reason, I make the claim that they&#8217;re all selectorized.)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that all of these have a place in your routine&#8211;\u00a0 Free weights are the best, but machines and sleds have their place as well.<\/p>\n<p>If you learned something today, that&#8217;s great, if not&#8211;\u00a0 Good on you for reading through the end and knowing about all of these!\u00a0 Like I said, this is mostly to make sure everyone knows what we&#8217;re talking about for next week&#8217;s post.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a purely informational article, mostly in preparation for our post next week.\u00a0 Most people are well versed in what we&#8217;re going to discuss today, and it&#8217;s the method by which we move weight.
