{"id":1152,"date":"2015-09-22T08:57:44","date_gmt":"2015-09-22T15:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/devinephysiques.com\/blog\/?p=1152"},"modified":"2015-09-22T09:06:21","modified_gmt":"2015-09-22T16:06:21","slug":"personal-trainer-vs-personal-exerciser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devinephysiques.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/22\/personal-trainer-vs-personal-exerciser\/","title":{"rendered":"Personal Trainer vs. Personal Exerciser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I interact with a lot of other personal trainers on forums, and here are some things that come up pretty frequently with new trainers looking for advice from more established trainers:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How intense should a client&#8217;s workout be?<\/li>\n<li>How often should you change a client&#8217;s workout plan?<\/li>\n<li>Should you listen to clients who want more variety?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I want to take a moment to answer those questions, but before I do that, I want to paraphrase\u00a0a response that a well seasoned trainer gave:<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;You are a personal trainer, not a personal exerciser, right?&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>So that begs the question: What exactly is a\u00a0trainer? \u00a0What exactly is an &#8220;exerciser&#8221;? \u00a0A personal trainer is someone who trains you for a specific goal. . . \u00a0Which differs from a personal exerciser in that an exerciser is just making sure you get exercise. \u00a0Exercise doesn&#8217;t have to have a goal; it doesn&#8217;t have to have a method; it doesn&#8217;t even have to have a plan&#8211; \u00a0It&#8217;s activity with the intention of keeping you active, and that&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1155\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/devinephysiques.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/81XwoTQyvQL._SL1500_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1155\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1155\" src=\"http:\/\/devinephysiques.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/81XwoTQyvQL._SL1500_-275x300.jpg\" alt=\"Pictured: Not a Trainer.\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/devinephysiques.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/81XwoTQyvQL._SL1500_-275x300.jpg 275w, https:\/\/devinephysiques.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/81XwoTQyvQL._SL1500_-939x1024.jpg 939w, https:\/\/devinephysiques.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/81XwoTQyvQL._SL1500_.jpg 1375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1155\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pictured: Not a Trainer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In contrast, a training session is just one piece in a much larger puzzle. \u00a0During my consultation with each client, I ask them to sum up their health and fitness goals in one sentence&#8211; \u00a0This forces each person to really examine their goals and make them clear and concise. \u00a0From this goal, I can get started on a plan:<\/p>\n<p>I look at how we would achieve this goal over the long term, and then break this up into smaller chunks (training periods); and within each training period, I can look at how the sessions should be structured. \u00a0Even within the sessions, I can look at progressions that can be made and benchmarks that should be met. \u00a0(Periodization is a lot more complicated than this, and involves more blocks and periods than I describe, but this is a very simple way of describing it!) \u00a0When someone comes in for the first session, I already know how the next 3 months should be done, and beyond in most cases, because I&#8217;ve already planned that far ahead. . .<\/p>\n<h3>Because I&#8217;m a trainer, training someone for a specific goal.<\/h3>\n<p>So, to answer those initial three questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How intense should a client&#8217;s workout be? \u00a0As intense as they need to be to achieve their goal; keeping in mind that there are different ways to define intensity. \u00a0From an exercise science standpoint, intensity only refers to the amount of resistance you&#8217;re using on each exercise, whereas we typically think of intensity as perceived level of exertion.<\/li>\n<li>How often should you change a client&#8217;s workout plan? \u00a0A workout plan should be properly periodized, and should be changed as often as necessary for them to achieve their goals.<\/li>\n<li>Should you listen to clients who want more variety? \u00a0You should listen, and take them into account, and try and work in suggestions where possible&#8211; \u00a0However, keep in mind that you&#8217;re training them for a specific goal, and don&#8217;t compromise that.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I interact with a lot of other personal trainers on forums, and here are some things that come up pretty frequently with new trainers looking for advice from more established trainers: How intense should a client&#8217;s workout be?
